Is CRO really just changing the button colour?

No. CRO is a full process built on hypotheses, and every hypothesis starts from one question: what is the customer afraid of?

A high-ticket fashion brand in the Egyptian market. The metrics showed strong interest, high content views and high sessions. So why weren't people buying?

The funnel said: add-to-cart was low, ATC to checkout was a decent rate, and after that no purchases at all.

Start with checkout. While testing I was autofilling my details without paying attention. When I stopped and looked properly, town, state and zip code were mandatory. In Egypt. That alone was breaking everything.

Then the homepage. There was no wireframe at all, just two large images representing two categories. So a full wireframe was built: hero with banner and CTA, then best sellers, then the women's collection, then pre-order as exclusive, then our story, then FAQ, then footer.

The category page needed merchandising. There was no pricing strategy and every price sat close together, so nothing pulled the eye. Badges went in with clear colours: best seller, fast moving, best offer. The discount had been 5% or 10%, which on an expensive product is meaningless, so it became a fixed amount.

The product page is where the decision actually begins. The question there: expensive product, good photography, so what makes the customer afraid to buy? That it arrives not as expected.

A sticky header bar went in reading "free shipping for limited time," highlighted again at checkout.

Then the formula the page was rebuilt on. A unique title expressing the material. Star reviews so the customer feels reassured. Urgency in the bar and in the CTA. And simplicity: there had been two CTAs, so one was removed, keeping add-to-cart because fashion rewards a larger basket and it lifts AOV. Underneath the CTA went the size guide and refund policy, answering his questions before he asks them.

Small things were breaking it too. Variants only appeared once you selected a different size. Dropdowns became icons. And people kept asking whether the brand was Egyptian and whether it sold locally, so badges went in: 100% authentic, 100% Egyptian made, COD available.

The result: conversion rate increased fifteenfold.

CRO isn't cosmetic. It's answering the customer's fear on the page, not in the ad.

The lesson

CRO starts with: what is the customer afraid of?
